The Organization
Results obtained by or with the help of the Washington Airports
Task Force include:
- At Washington Dulles, 51 daily flights serving 18 domestic
and two international markets have expanded to over 900 daily
flights serving 70 domestic and 36 international markets;
- 300,000
international air travelers expanded to 4 million in 2001;
- Transfer
of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) from
federal to regional control in 1987. As a regional authority,
MWAA has been able to invest over $2 billion in rebuilding
Reagan National and expanding Washington Dulles, and is now
poised to invest another $4 billion at Washington Dulles;
- An
"open skies" air service agreement with Canada-the first negotiated
by the United States in response to community needs;
- The
Udvar-Hazy Center for the National Air and Space Museum, which
opened December 2003; " Ground access improvements, including
a program to bring rail transit to the Dulles Corridor;
- A
streamlined FAA Air Traffic Control system now open, reducing
flight times as well as costs and providing expansion capacity
for the future;
- Reopening
Reagan National to scheduled air service following the September
11th tragedies.
